Which version of the bible is the best choice to read for a humanities student?

Mayola Sylva: I have found that reading the same section in two or three different versions is the best way to really grasp what it is saying. Any version will give you an idea that you could go with, but because it has been translated so many times the perspective is a little different in each one. Good luck, and I hope that this helps!

Luke Gacusan: Hmmm...good question. Really, it depends on WHY you are reading it. "Humanities Student" doesn't really tell us enough. This might help you ballpark ithttp://www.BibleSelector.comFor the most influential English bible - King James Version (I strongly recommend the NCPB as the most authentic revision)http://www.bibleselector.com/r_kjv_apoc.htmlFor the most influential bible period, you would need an English translation of the Latin Vulgate (unless you read Latin, in which case the Vulgate is available at the Vatican website). Zora Mazzie: Why stick to a single version? Check out this website:http://www.biblegateway.com/It has something like 20 different English language versions on it. Pick a version you find easy to read, then if you need to look up specific passages check the! m out in the various different versions....Show more

Bry! ant Chaudhry: In English, the King james version is often considered to have the best prose. It is also considered to have the most translation errors. Since you ask as a Humanities student, go with the best prose.

Dana Russian: I own several, but the King James Version is the one most quoted. Its language is the most poetic of the various bibles I own. BTW, they are soon releasing a new version of the New International Translation, and it's already taking heat from the Right-wing Religious Republicans for being too "modern." The Southern Baptists and born-again types want the old ways where women are subservient to men, meat is to be eaten, blacks are inferior, etc....Show more
