Lewis Ranft: all i can really say is practice, practice, practice!!!! thats really how all us makeup gurus get to be so good. everyday we are pretty much trying out new techniques and looking for new tips and tricks. if you have any doubts about doing your makeup yourself you can always schdule an appointment with a makeup artists at sephora or MAC and they will do it for you ( i think MAC does it for free if you have an appointment, im not 100% sure so dont take my word for it).
