Neville Dautremont: WILTON puts out some great books. Their annual Year Book (soft cover) has great ideas and all techniques.

I'm very sure your friend knows a thing or two about them ;) The Cake Bible has quality recipes (hundreds of cake recipes). The author is a leading expert on baking cakes. She even has a website dedicated to baker's questions. I personally own Lesley Herbert's Complete Book of Sugar Flowers. I love the diagrams and pictures and easy-to-follow instructions.
