Hot, hot, hot in Sichuan

My friend Eric Ripert (maybe you know him from such previous buddy films as "Peru" and "Marseille" -- as well as the upcoming "Bad Boys VII: The Revenge") has never been to mainland China.
And due, perhaps, to his adherence to the teachings of Tibetan Buddhism -- and a friendship with Richard Gere -- he had concerns about what kind of a welcome he'd receive. For the first few nights, he slept with a tin foil helmet around his head, convinced, every time his cell phone dropped a call that "they" were on to him.
I assured him repeatedly that he was the very last person any Chinese secret services would give a shit about, but he was unconvinced. Nonetheless, his paranoia was acute.

More comically, the level of heat presented by the Sichuanese specialties in Chengdu, where we spent most of our time, was, shall we say, rather more than his delicate French palate was used to.
Coddled by years of foie gras, runny cheeses, flaky pastries and the subtle notes of many fine wines, the searing burn of the Sichuan dried chilies and the numbing, delightfully disorienting effects of the Sichuan peppercorns were a challenge.

Chinese drinking traditions were intimidating as well. With this in mind, I arranged a formal banquet for my friend -- with executives from a baiju distillery.
Generally, at functions like this the guest of honor (Eric in this case) must toast each and every other guest individually -- meaning one must drink about eight to 10 times more than everyone else. To his credit, Eric soldiered through like a champion, dignity and liver intact.
8 dishes every Sichuan visitor must try
Around halfway through our adventures in Sichuan Province, though, the Frenchman was folding at the knees. He pleaded for a respite from the delicious but damaging local flavors. So my crew, taking pity on him, took him to the nearest western style eatery -- a HOOTERS.
I did not have the heart to take photos of what I saw that night. I saw many terrible things.

I can be a cruel man. But not so cruel that I could or would Instagram the sad spectacle of my Michelin-starred friend gratefully digging into a "Double D" burger while our servers, in spandex hot pants, gyrated robotically to Justin Bieber between courses. But I will treasure the memory. Oh, yes.
In case you are thinking I spent all my time torturing the sensitive Frenchman with caustic substances, I did try and entertain, educate and enlighten (the "Three Es" as we call it at my ashram).
I introduced him to the healthful benefits of a public ear cleaning by a trained professional -- along with complimentary spinal realignment.
Did he appreciate it? No. He quibbled about hygiene.
I even took him back to culinary school for a crash course in the mysteries of the local, regional cuisine. His cleaver skills are -- to be charitable -- rudimentary. Unable to suck up to the instructor due to the language barrier, he cribbed constantly from yours truly.
I don't want to use the word "cheating," but some might.

How to Act when You Have Fever

If you are ill and/or have any fevers, please treat them with the following instructions below.
1.Check whether you have a high fever or not by using the thermometer. The average body temperature of a person tends to hover at around 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit), so a fever is a temperature which appears above this baseline temperature.
2. Try not to disturb other members of your family about it until it is very serious. By all means, allow them to help you where possible, but also avoid going too near to them to prevent spreading possible infections.
3.Stay at home. There is no need to attend work or school; your state of health will make it hard to pay attention, and working with the ailment of a fever may only add stress to yourself and your body.
4.Go to Sleep. Sleeping helps you and your immune system to recover faster from illness, as less energy is being spent on waking activities, meaning more energy may be contributed to fighting illness.
5.Keep a thermometer handy, and check your temperature regularly. Call a doctor or friend if the temperature keeps getting higher and inform them of any other difficulties you may have, e.g. headaches, body pains or loss of appetite.
6. Snack on crackers. It is recommended you snack on saltines to help irritation go down.
7.Use a damp washcloth. Use this often and dampening it with cold or cool water. Apply to the forehead and leave it until it starts to dry up. This helps alleviate any 'heaty' or uncomfortable warmth on the body by lessening blood flow (via vasoconstriction of blood vessels), and therefore aid in temperature maintenance.
8.Keep pills. Sudden aches may occur in your body or head. Keep some medicine to help relive the pain. Panadol for example, is effective in lessening pain brought on by body aches.
9.Other symptoms. If you have or occur these other symptoms talk to your doctor and inform him/her of all the details: nausea, headaches, dizziness, vomiting, violent shaking of body or hands, slurred speech, blurry vision, unusual staggering while walking, and/or sudden sleep.

How to Do Meditation

A guided meditation while taking a break from working at the computer is a fast way to find relaxation. Through simple yoga movements associated with positive phrases, you can dissolve inner blockages and recharge your mind positive. Get peace, power, love and happiness in five minutes.
1.Find peace in prayer with your religious figure (e. g. God).
2.Send light or pray for (happiness, peace, love) to all beings: "I send light to ... (name). May all people be happy. May the world be happy."
3. Begin by understanding that this computer meditation is aimed at people of all religious denominations and it may also be practiced by atheists. Use or adapt the phrases that work for you. You can also rephrase the mantras and make them suitable for you. You can define God in your own way as a supreme being or as a cosmic force or life power. You can omit the mantra "Om God" if it does not fit for you. Hence, it is advised that the remainder of the article be read in this light.
4.Connect yourself with the Enlightened (Saints) or God (or other entity) Say: "Om all enlightened masters. Om God. I beg for guidance and help on my way."
5.Get inner peace. Say: "I take things as they are. I flow positively with my life."
6. Calm your mind. Speak (or think) one minute the mantra: "Om Shanti. Om Peace."
7.Try focusing on peaceful thoughts and avoid thinking of the stressful thoughts

Simple C++ string and vector classes download

Simple C++ string and vector classes

Simple C++ string and vector classes Description
The classes are useful as training examples for a C+++ tutorial, for novices in C++, or if you have to avoid the standard C++ library with its classes std::string and std::vector class for any reason. It contains basic functionality compatible with the std:: versions, more functions can easily be added.

Class my_string is based on original work by Christian Stigen Larsen, 2007.

It may happen in real projects that the std library must be avoided: I needed it
because of link problems in an application using mixed libraries, especially one compiled with an old Intel compiler icc 7 (for Linux), and other libs compiled with newer compilers. Icc 7 uses an incompatible c++ standard library implementation.
Simple C++ string and vector classes Features
  • portable source code
  • simple class design
  • C++ standard library not needed
  • useable as replacements to std::string and std::vector
