While dual licensure is certainly a great thing and I recommend it, the longer you are out of a special education pos! ition, the less likely you are to obtain one. Special education law and practices are changing frequently and there is a great deal of paperwork that you need to be knowledgeable about. Typically, schools want to hire special education teachers that have a proven track record and can show they are up-to-date in the latest knowledge surrounding their content area....Show more

Joan Stavropoulos: I have both licenses, too and it allows for a lot of flexibility. I will say that once you have some time in one type of classroom it can be difficult for a principal to allow you to switch gears...I've seen it happen. Two of my friends are classroom teachers who finished dual licensure programs and now want to try something else. They are having difficulty and they aren't bad teachers. The principals cite that they won't qualify for the mentoring programs designed for young teachers and won't have the know how to complete the special education paperwork like a veteran and ! it's true.... Kandi Lough: As long as you get a 'practicum' or 'student teaching experience'. Although keep in mind for states that do not require a Masters to teach and pay based on years of education coming in with a Masters in some cases may price you out of consideration.
